Rock County Flight supports Janesville National Night Out
On Tuesday, August 5th, Major David Deiler and Lieutenant Colonel Larry Ochowski participated in Janesville’s National Night Out, sponsored by the local police department. The members manned an information booth providing information to the general public on Civil Air Patrol and on the risks associated with alcohol and other drug abuse. Police estimated the crowd at between 3,500 and 4,000 people for this year’s event. We were ably assisted by “Capt. Cornelius” a space monkey stuffed animal purchased by Lt. Col. Ochowski approximately 20 years ago at a CAP conference.
The National Night Out Program increases public awareness of community-based and policing resources in communities across the nation. The Janesville Police Department’s SWAT team, K-9 dog with handler and “Taser” demonstrations along with fire department static displays of an ambulance, ladder truck and a foot race between a SWAT team member in full gear and a fire fighter in full turnout gear were highlights of the evening. The program also enables various organizations, such as Civil Air Patrol, to showcase their programs in a family orientated environment.
This year’s event had the largest attendance figures of any of the previous National Night’s Out according to a Janesville Police Department estimate.
