Two members earn Kohl Foundation educational awards
Two members of the La Crosse Composite Squadron received recognition from the Kohl Education Foundation for excellence in education. Herb Kohl, a former senator from Wisconsin, presented the awards.
The foundation awarded Captain Mary Beth Marx, a Science and English teacher at Westby Middle School, a Kohl Teacher Fellowship. Only one hundred teachers receive this award annually in Wisconsin. Marx’s award cited her energy level in the classroom and her ability to help students understand how their actions affect the world around them as factors in her award.
Marx has long had a commitment to aerospace education, founding the annual Aerospace Education Day at her school. The day-long event provides hands-on learning about aviation, aerodynamics, physics, and flight simulator experiences. The La Crosse Composite Squadron provided support to the event in 2013. Marx receives a $1,000 honorarium for herself and another $1,000 grant for her school.
During the same award ceremony, Cadet Major Michael Cunningham received a Kohl Excellence Scholarship. Students with outstanding academic records and a history of community involvement receive the $1,000 scholarship. The foundation awards 180 scholarships annually.
Cunningham currently serves as the Cadet Commander for the La Crosse Composite Squadron. He also recently accepted an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
