Walco Composite Squadron welcomes new commander
ELKHORN, Wis. – On Thursday, Civil Air Patrol’s Walco Composite Squadron, located in Elkhorn, Wis., welcomed a new squadron commander when Major Ronald Sorenson accepted command from Lieutenant Colonel Julie Sorenson, Southeast Group commander. Captain Pam Thomas relinquished command to Sorenson in the special Change of Command ceremony.
Honored guests in attendance were Major Rose Hunt, Wisconsin Wing vice commander and Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Curry, previous Southeast Group commander. Various other squadron commanders and cadet parents were also present to witness the ceremony and to participate in the celebration.
Maj. Sorenson has been in CAP since September 1993. He is currently the deputy director of professional development for Wisconsin Wing as well as the internal aerospace education and professional development officer for Southeast Group. He has also held positions as a communications, aerospace education and finance officer both on the squadron and group levels. The many ratings that he holds in emergency services will serve this squadron well as they are known for their ground team capabilities.
Thomas, who has been a member of Civil Air Patrol since July 2003, took command of the squadron in December 2009 from Major Robert Thomas. Both Capt. and Maj. Thomas will be moving out of state in the future and are entrusting their award-winning squadron to its new commander, Major Sorenson.
Walco Composite Squadron members are looking forward to working with Maj. Sorenson and hope to continue growing in all three of CAP’s missions.
