Local cadets to take time out this holiday to remember veterans
La Crosse, Wis. – It may seem early to be thinking about Christmas, but the cadets of the La Crosse Composite Squadron are already making plans for bringing a moment of reflection and honor to the busy holiday season.
Along with hundreds of other Civil Air Patrol squadrons around the country, the La Crosse Composite Squadron will be participating in this year’s Wreaths Across America program. This year marks the first year that the squadron will participate in this nationwide effort.
As part of Wreaths Across America, cadets from the La Crosse squadron will lay wreaths at the grave sites of veterans who are interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse. The wreaths will be laid simultaneously with thousands of wreaths at other sites around the nation. The squadron’s goal is to recognize 300 fallen veterans this year.
Logistics Health Incorporated has stepped up and donated 67 wreaths to the effort, but more local support is needed. “We feel it’s important to say thank you,” says Major Todd Mandel, “and to teach the next generation about the sacrifices and commitment that those who came before them have made.”
Each wreath costs $15, with $10 of that going to Wreaths Across America and $5 going to support the local non-profit organization sponsoring the wreath laying. The wreaths are purchased, at cost, from Wreaths Across America and are shipped free of charge by volunteer over-the-road haulers.
Wreaths can be purchased from the squadron’s website at www.lacrossecap.org or by mailing a check for $15/wreath to the La Crosse Composite Squadron, 2906 Fanta Reed Road, La Crosse, WI 54601. Donations must be received by November 23 in order to be included in this year’s ceremony.
